It was 2005 and it was the first time he came over to visit me at my apartment. (Gosh, how long has it been? Seems like yesterday.) I was trying not to freak out but I had asked my now husband, Chevontez, to come over. I was all dude, don't stay home, come and hang out and watch a movie. It wasn't a date, just a hey we're strangers let's see if we have anything in common at all hangout sesh.
He showed up in a purple jersey from high school and these terrible yellow shorts, which he still has by the way. Looking back I don't know if he was just not that into me at the time (he was sporting some serious ex girl baggage) or if he seriously thought wearing high school gym clothes would be a great idea. When I saw him I definitely had a what was I thinking moment.
So after the movie was over he started asking me all these random questions.
"So what do you listen to," Chevontez asked.
"I listen to pretty much everything." I said
"Yea, but who is your favorite band?" he said.
We sat in an awkward silence as he was waiting to hear my answer.
"I dunno." I said and then listed the radio stations I listened to.
"Ok but what CD is in your player right now?" he responded. I could tell he was a little baffled by my answers.
"I think it's a mix." I said.
"Do you know 311?" he said.
"Umm, yea I think so."
He was starting to become a little uncalm at this point. But I was all mixed up and nervous. I did like a lot of music but I am absolutely terrible with remembering names of things including bands, celebrities, song names, movie names, etc. So I was in trouble from the start. Plus, I don't think anyone had ever sat me down to just talk about music. He was genuinely interested and I totally failed the test. It was pretty embarrassing. I wanted to freeze time and run away.
All in all it wasn't a terrible night. I guess it's alright considering we are married now. The good thing is it was also the day I started to really listen to music that I actually liked. Before that I just kinda went along with what my friends were listening to. I hadn’t really figured out what my favorite music was and I had barely gone to any concerts.
Chevontez changed all that. He really is the reason I am somewhat knowledgeable about music now. His questions made me reconsider everything and I am pretty lucky to have met him. I told myself I will not make that same mistake twice so I listen to a ton of music and try to make sure I can answer his questions. And, yes I know who 311 is.
Happy 311 day to all you crazies. Rock on with your whisky and wine.
